During the Summer of 2014 I had participated in an internship for the University of Utah at Full Draw Archery in Sandy, UT. This internship lasted 10 weeks from the beginning of May until the middle of July.
Full Draw Archery is a recreation based company that provides the local archery community with a place they can go to purchase equipment from a wide selection of merchandise and get assistance in choosing and setting up this equipment from a knowledgeable staff of passionate archers. Whether you are a beginning archer or a seasoned competitor, Full Draw Archery is there to take care of all your archery needs. Along with providing customers with the merchandise they need, Full Draw Archery also provides an indoor range where customers can both test out the products they are interested in but also practice with there equipment in a control environment without the effects of weather.
Due to Full Draw Archery being a retail business, my internship was mainly based on customer service. I felt that working with a company that caters to customers and lives or dies based on their customer service would be a great opportunity for me to serve my internship. I felt this way because in the recreation industry, businesses rely on customers and the only way to ensure customer’s return is through customer’s service. Because of this I had developed two customer service based goals:
1. Develop my salesmanship skills by selling a minimum of five bows during my time with the company.
2. Provide a memorable experience to groups that were scheduled for lessons resulting in further participation by these individuals in archery.
My purpose for these goals was simply to learn, by experience, to work with customers in a retail setting. By learning the skill to effectively work with customers I hope to become a desired asset to customer-based businesses
Along with my goals in customer service I also developed the following goal that is more specific to inventory management.
3. Learn how to keep an accurate Inventory of the merchandise we have to sale.
Although inventory counts are a part of business that is generally specific to each company, learning how companies track inventory can assist in being able to develop inventory-tracking process later in future businesses.
In conclusion, I spent a great deal of time during my internship with Full Draw Archery working with the public. Whether is was while training or assisting customers in product selection, I improved my customer service skills and provided memorable experiences to our customers. This became apparent when customers would thank me for my assistance and tell me they will be back because of the time I spent with them helping and making sure they left with what they needed to. In fact multiple times after I gave individuals lessons and there time was up, they would immediately come back onto the sales floor and ask me to assist them pick out equipment because they enjoyed the experience so much. I was also told by one of the employees multiple times that I was incredibly engaging with customers and was eager to help the.
I feel that I have gained a lot more customer service experience from this internship and believe that I can excel in customer service because of this opportunity.
