Special Event Program Plan Portfolio
During the first semester of the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism program at the University of Utah, first semester students were split into groups based off of there emphasis area in the program. These groups than were assigned a large projects known as the Special Event Program Plan Portfolio (SEPPP). To complete this project each group had to develop an event plan and than host the event. Teams of two to three group members were than assigned tasks such as marketing, financial, risk management, operations, evaluations, diversity, and facilitation/management that they would develop for the event plan.
The commercial recreation and sustainable tourism group, in which i was, had planned an event that would show a ski video and hold prize drawing for all the attendance. Along with the video and drawing we also provided booth space to vendors and organizations such as soul pole (ski pole) and the US Forest Service. Once this event had been planned we had than held our event at the send of the fall semester a few weeks before the semester was out.
By completing this project, as a students, we had learned many important aspects of event planning such as risk management, when an event should be held, cover charge for the event, how to market the event, and many other skills. Not only did we learn how to put on an event but by developing the risk management plans, financial plans, and marketing plans we learned how to protect our customer and clients, how to manage a budget, and how to market ourself in future business endeavor.
